Chapter 1.3 - Growing up with the Munkers

When the family broke up, there was quite a struggle between Dad’s parents and Mom’s parents as to who would get little Sis and me. Dad’s parents, John and Emma Krause, then lived on a farm in Smith Valley about a mile from where the folks had originally lived. This farm was later taken over by Uncle Alfred and Aunt Edna but for years Grandpa and Grandma Krause lived with them. Later, Grandma and Grandpa Krause moved to Kalispell in a house on Sixth Avenue Northwest until the both died, one in 1925 and another in 1926. In the end, Grandma Annie Munker won the struggle of who would get us. Lilly and I called their place our home until Grandma Munker died in 1935. Grandpa John died in 1930. During this time Mom was still in Warm Springs. Grandpa John was a very ornery person. It was very hard to get along with him. Sis was three and I was five when we moved in with them. We never saw any love or affection between Grandma and Grandpa and we never received any–not even a hug! Grandma was very good to us though and really took good care of us. She taught the both of us many good things. She taught us about gardening, work habits, proper living behavior, and she took us to church every Sunday.
