Chapter 1.14 - Grandpa Munker Dies / The Krause Farm

Old Grandpa John Munker died one noon in the spring of 1930 while he was walking home from work. He had a heart attack right in front of the high school which was one block from our house. Incidentally, Sis and I had to go through the high school grounds two more blocks to the grade school where we went first through eighth. So we never had any problems of long hikes to and from school. Sis and I continued to live with grandparents in 804 Fifth Avenue West, or Grandma after Grandpa died. Dad’s brother Uncle Alfred and Aunt Edna and Cousin Margret, in about 1929 took over Grandma and Grandpa Krause’s farm in Smith Valley to keep from losing all the money that they had lent his parents while they were trying to farm. Later, Uncle Al bought his parents a house in northwest Kalispell after they had lived with him and Aunt Edna for years on farm and then they lived in this little house until they died. And Dad’s youngest brother, Uncle Walt, lived and Aunt Clara, his wife, lived with the old folks and took care of them there in Kalispell until they died. Then, Walt wound up with the house which he used as a down payment to buy a rundown farm north of Bigfork in 1931. Incidentally, this is the place where the Krause family reunion will be held with his youngest son Bob and his wife in 1991. All the old buildings are gone that brand new home it’s a beautiful place and you kids should try to get there. That’s going to be a fun thing.
