But when it got colder I was invited to move in with Uncle Herman Krause, Dad’s next younger brother, and his family. They were living on a farm they were renting about a mile south of Dad’s place there on the river. Uncle Herman and Aunt Edith, they were a real affectionate bunch, probably the most affectionate of the relatives I ever saw. And they had five kids. Little Colleen was two years old, and then came Emily and Fred, that we called Snooks, Bob and LaVone. And we just had a ball. There was no money, [but] we did have food. They had chickens, they’d butcher a pig, we’d go catch fish, shoot a duck now and then.
